Teaching and Integrating Technology
Welcome to my little slice of the Internet. My name is Mikey McKillip or as some of my past students once called me Ato Mikey. 'Ato' mean mister or a title of respect given to a male in Tigrinya, the national language of Eritrea, East Africa. My students called me by my first name because one's first name is that person's name. One's second name is that person's father's name. I was given the name 'atomikey' by my students at the Hadas Elementary School in Eritrea, while teaching for the US Peace Corps in 1997. Read more about my experience as a Peace Corps teacher from an article I wrote for TESOL Magazine and Peace Corps Online.
Currently I am employed at IST, the International School of Tanganyika in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. IST is an IB World School. I am teaching Grade 2 at the moment learning all about the PYP (IB Primary Years Programme). Please visit my current website ISTGrade2.wordpress.com to see what my students and I have been up to. Before joining IST I was working in Shanghai, China as a Grade 5 teacher and the Technology Integration Coordinator for the lower school at the Shanghai Community International School, Pudong campus.
I started this site as a way to develop and record strategies for myself and for other teachers to integrate technology in a meaningful way to engage student learning.
